Kaprun, a ski resort in Austria, is located in the Pinzgau region. Linked to the winter sport resort of Zell am See, Kaprun was initially considered as a mountain guide village. In 1893 a pioneer, Nikolauss Gassner, made the famous gorge, called Sigmund Thun Klamm accessible. Even today its natural scenery is a delight for any visitor. It was in 1955 that the “Tauernkraftwerke” hydroelectric powerstations started to be built. They are the main energy sources for all of Austria. The 20th century has seen the arrival of tourism and skiers from all over the world in the ski resort of Kaprun. Today, the winter sports resort has 55km of pistes, i.e. 21 pistes altogether. It has comprehensive sporting facilities, such as the remarkable Kaprun sports centre. The following sports activities are offered in the ski resort: magnificent cross-country trails (15km), glacier skiing, snowboarding, carving skiing… In Kaprun, the Klizsteinhorn Galcier allows skiers to begin skiing from the month of October. Thanks to the link with Zell am See, skiers and snowboarders can avail of a skiable area with over 130km of pistes, and have access to the snowpark and half-pipe.
